I barely was able to finish this introductory book to the series, and often found it frustrating with the reader left to try to patch together the logic. It felt as if the book was written for an insider who already knew the background, or that maybe there was an earlier book that explained a few things that maybe I missed. If the book's intent was to draw readers into the series, it failed miserably. Having said that, if you can get past this book, the rest of the books in the series are very, very well written and I have to admit to becoming addicted. If you want a quick hit or fast story stop here, as you must have patience with the books getting into the same level of detail is Tolkien's Hobbit trilogy. For myself, I loved the detail and richness of the characters. The writing style of King is undeniably a force to behold. I strongly recommend the Dark Tower series; as mediocre as this first book may have been.
